Latrines

WHERE WILL I GO TO THE TOILET?

Sudan - © Martyn Broughton

At first, you, your family, and others around you will go to the toilet wherever you can—in open areas, behind bushes, or even in plastic bags.  But if this practice continues near to where you and others are living, potentially fatal water-borne diseases that cause diarrhoea, such as dysentery and cholera, can break out and spread quickly.

Building hygienic latrines with proper waste disposal is crucial to preventing such disease outbreaks.  Certain types of latrine can also reduce the number of flies that can spread disease.

You may find yourself helping to build latrines away from water sources, so that the waste does not contaminate the water supply.
